Descripción
Adam es un joven técnico checo que sale como cada mañana de su casa hacia el trabajo cuando, en un despiste con el teléfono móvil mientras conducía, choca contra un camión en un aparatoso e indiscutiblemente letal accidente.
Tras tan fatídico acontecimiento, no cabría más que esperar una rápida muerte, pero contra todo pronostico racional nuestro protagonista no sólo permanece vivo, sino que sin un rasguño… sano y salvo, pero en un lugar que nada tiene que ver con un hospital. Despierta en el camastro de una barraca numerada, desorientado, quién sabe si en las lindes del otro mundo, en medio de una isla en cuya parte más alta destaca tan sólo un viejo y siniestro campanario, perdida en algún océano, y en compañía de extraños personajes tanto o más desubicados que él, y cuyas intenciones no conoce. A poco que indaga, descubre que sus compañeros han vivido experiencias similares, muy cercanas a la muerte, pero con una curiosa particularidad, parece que sus desgracias tuvieron lugar en diferentes épocas de los últimos cuarenta años.
Ante tal corriente de inexplicables acontecimientos, Adam buscará la manera de salir de ese lugar y el porqué de su situación actual. Pero no será sencillo: la isla y sus habitantes parecen estar vigilados por una indefinida presencia que, de igual manera que los mantiene vivos, los hace desaparecer de la noche a la mañana cuando al oír la tercera campana todos caen presa de un inexorable y profundo sueño. Un sueño que está muy lejos de ser plácido…
