Max Eberling | Ana's father disappeared under mysterious circumstances when she was 6. Although he was highly regarded before his disappearance, since then perceptions have changed, and many theorize that he has gone underground, devoting his considerable skills to darker purposes. |

Nadia Eberling | Ana's eccentric mother has become a recluse since the disappearance of Max. With Ana as her only link to the world – and some would say sanity, she jealousy guards her daughter, to the point of sheltering her from every conceivable risk. As a result, she has turned the old Eberling estate into a gilded cage – from which Ana frequently plots her escape. |

Thomas Eberling | The founder of the Eberling empire, Thomas' early inventions made him a celebrity and earned him a fortune. Despite his success, he was a humble man beloved by all who knew him. After a tragic loss in the family, a grieving Thomas withdrew from public life in 1853. His official retirement was questioned, however, and an elaborate home laboratory was rumored to have been constructed on his Zurich estate. No such lab was ever discovered. |

Edgar Eberling | Prodigal doesn't begin to describe Thomas' son Edgar. After failing to follow in his father's footsteps, Edgar became a notorious adventurer. In fact his reputation as a philanderer and a globetrotter grew to the point where he was said to have continuous love affairs in every far-flung corner of the world – at a time when sea travel was the fastest mode of transportation. News reports of his exploits curiously failed to say how Edgar might have pulled off this impossible feat. |

Darwin | A mechanical bird, Darwin is perhaps the most advanced automaton ever constructed. Thomas built him as a companion for his later years. But the technology that powered this talking machine was lost for several generations. When Ana re-discovers it, she revives the bird and sparks a lasting friendship. |
