Descripción
Sam Svarosky, un comerciante deshonesto y coleccionista de piedras preciosas, quiere hacerse con una fabulosa gema. Pero su dueña, la actriz Diana Stevens, no quiere vendérsela. Svarosky no se da por vencido y confía la tarea de robar la gema a Tom Scool, un investigador privado cuya licencia ha sido revocada debido a sus métodos poco ortodoxos y que pasa apuros económicos, por lo que sin gustarle decide aceptar el trabajo.
Diana está en su chalet de montaña con el personal de su nueva película y para la ocasión ha invitado a Eric Wells, un escritor de novelas policiacas que escribió el libro en el que se basa el guión de la película. Wells que es un misántropo y vive una vida casi recluida, es secuestrado a su llegada al aeropuerto por los hombres de Svarosky, y Tom que se parece mucho a Wells usando una barba postiza y maquillaje, llega al chalet suplantándole.
Pero la actriz es asesinada por uno de sus invitados y debido a la tormenta de nieve la policía tardará en llegar. Los demás pensando que eres Eric Wells te encomiendan la tarea de investigar el asesinato.
